DIY Rustic Shelves Ikea EKBY hack

The day is finally here! The nursery is finished! Well, as finished as it's going to get for the next couple years. But, I'm not going to do the full reveal quite yet. That will be next week. Today, I'm sharing the DIY shelves I built that go above the changing table.

I wanted them to coordinate with his campaign dresser so I knew I'd probably be making them myself. I measured my wall and decided I wanted to center three foot long shelves. I bought some of the EKBY Valter brackets from Ikea but the shelves only came in 31" or 46". I also knew I could make my own for less! Here's how you can make your own.

1/2/3/4/5

I went to Home Depot and bought a 1x8x6, had them cut it in half and that was it. About a 5 minute trip. I got out my sander and gave the wood a quick sanding with 220 grit sandpaper.

Then I stained them with my favorite Minwax stain, dark walnut. I think stain color is one of those things you find what you like and stick with it for everything. Or, maybe it's that one quart lasts forever so you use what you have instead of buying a different one each time...

After the stain was dry, I applied a coat of Tough Coat. I love that it's completely odorless and dries in seconds!

After spray painting the brackets gold, up they went.
Installing them was a little trickier since I wasn't using an Ikea shelf. We pre-drilled holes into the shelves and then screwed the brackets onto the wall first and then into the shelf. The brackets are awkward to fit a drill in, so we screwed them in by hand, thus the pre-drilling!

I knew I could find a bunch of cute accessories for the shelves at Gordman's and I found the perfect complements to his rust orange, navy and aqua nursery decor.

I found this adorable chevron ampersand canvas and a block letter "J".

I thrifted these adorable wood cars {similar here} back when Eliza was a baby. I can't wait for him to play with them.

If you don't have a "Sophie" giraffe, then you should! I didn't have it with Eliza and it was one of my first purchases when I found I was pregnant again.

I'm in love with how his room is coming together. Stay tuned for the full nursery reveal next week!
